Bruce Edwards Ivins (/ ˈ aɪ v ɪ n z /; April 22, 1946 – July 29, 2008) [1] was an American microbiologist, vaccinologist, [1] senior biodefense researcher at the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Fort Detrick, Maryland, and the person suspected by the FBI of the 2001 anthrax attacks. On April 11, 2007, Ivins was put under periodic surveillance and an FBI document stated that he was "an extremely sensitive suspect in the 2001 anthrax attacks". [3] On July 29, 2008, Ivins died by suicide with an overdose of acetaminophen (paracetamol / Tylenol).
