The Southwestern University, officially the Southwestern University PHINMA (SWU PHINMA), is a private university in Cebu City, Philippines.. Founded and opened in the summer of 1946 by two pharmacists, SWU originally started as Southwestern Colleges and achieved university status on December 11, 1959. [1]

The school was named after its late founder, Matias Hipolito Aznar II, known to the general public as MHAM, to honor and perpetuate his memory. The Doctor of Medicine is the only academic program offered by the school which operates separately from SWU PHINMA.
This led the Department of Education, Culture and Sports to grant the institution the university status in 1983, and it subsequently renamed itself as Araullo University. On April 20, 2004, Araullo University became part of the PHINMA Education Network (PEN), an educational institution that aims to provide quality yet affordable education.
In 2007, to respond to the current trends of the maritime industry, the Maritime College of Southwestern University was re-established as The Maritime Regiment. In 2008, the college was recognized as a sister school of PMMA (Phil. Merchant Marine Academy) as its program gained recognition.
