Milo was the son of the Leudwinus of Trier and Willigard of Bavaria. He was born a nobleman and later styled Count of Trier. [1] His brother was Wido (Gui), Count of Hornbach. [2] Rotrude of Hesbaye was possibly his sister. [1] Lambert of Maastricht was a kinsman. Milo received a monastic education.
The studio is regarded as part of the Arts and Crafts Movement, [5] but was infused also with the contemporary spirit of Irish revivalism [6] and drew on the artistic tradition of Celtic manuscript illumination. Ireland became an internationally renowned center of stained-glass art at this time, to a large extent as a result of An Túr Gloine. [7]

Milo Martin studied in Lausanne (notably under Carl Albert Angst), Rome and Florence, but disapproved of art schools' teaching methods and decided to work alone. He specialised in neo-classical nude sculptures, realistic portraits and medal designs. He set up a studio in the Orangerie of Parc Mon-Repos.
