Ukiah (/ j uː ˈ k aɪ ə / yoo-KY-ə; Pomo: Yokáya, meaning "deep valley" or "south valley") [8] [9] is the county seat and largest city of Mendocino County, in the North Coast region of California. Ukiah had a population of 16,607 [7] at the 2020 census.

Clarion West Writers Workshop, founded in Seattle, Washington in 1971 by Vonda N. McIntyre. It has been held annually since 1984. Clarion South Writers Workshop was held at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. It was founded in 2004 and ran biennially to 2011. In 2009, Clarion South lost its venue, although the workshop was held that year.
The city is situated in Talmage, California, a rural community in southeastern Mendocino County about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Ukiah and 110 miles (180 km) north of San Francisco.
