The International S series is a range of trucks that was manufactured by International Harvester (later Navistar International) from 1977 to 2001. Introduced to consolidate the medium-duty IHC Loadstar and heavy-duty IHC Fleetstar into a single product range, the S series was slotted below the Transtar and Paystar Class 8 conventionals.
The 4000 Series were medium duty trucks introduced in 1988. They used an S Series cab with a new low-profile hood that improved driver visibility and reduced air resistance. Day and crew cabs were available. They were commonly used for local delivery and vocational work but there were also semi-tractor, service, and specialty models.

Matching the development of the International S series, during 1989, the model line underwent a major update, becoming the International 3800. The 3800 was also made in a truck variant. In 2004, the International 3800 ended production, replaced by the International 3300 (a cowled-chassis version of the International 4300/DuraStar ).
The International Harvester Company (IHC) has been building its own proprietary truck engines since the introduction of their first truck in 1907. International tended to use proprietary diesel engines. In the 1970s, IHC built the DVT 573 V-8 diesel of 240 and 260 hp (179 and 194 kW) but these were not highly regarded and relatively few were sold.

[1] The first purpose-built medium-duty truck designed by the company, International slotted the Loadstar between its light-duty pickup trucks (initially the C-series, later the D-series) and the heavy-duty R-series.
