Thomson was born on 5 June 1894 as Roy Herbert Thomson in Toronto, then part of York County, Ontario, Canada.His father was Herbert Thomson, a telegraphist turned barber who worked at Toronto's Grosvenor Hotel (at the corner of Yonge and Alexander streets – now the site of the Courtyard Marriott), and English-born Alice Maud.

Originally, the courtyard had a fountain surrounded by a circular driveway. [10] The driveway had been arranged to allow horse-drawn vehicles to enter the courtyard easily. [16] [17] During the construction of the Palace Hotel in the 1970s, a marble and granite medallion was placed in the courtyard. [18] The courtyard was renovated in 2013. [19]
The main portion of the Toronto Eaton Centre complex is bounded by Yonge Street on the east, Queen Street West on the south, Dundas Street West on the north, and to the west by James Street and Trinity Square. There are three office towers, while the main retail mall in the centre is organized around a long arcade, running parallel to Yonge Street.
