The engine is a V-twin four-stroke, 895 cc (54.6 cu in) or 993 cc (60.6 cu in) displacement, fan-driven air-cooled, gasoline engine design.The larger displacement is achieved by increasing the stroke from 78 to 87 mm (3.1 to 3.4 in), but using the same bore of 86 mm (3.4 in).
The Standard wet liner inline-four engine was an inline four cylinder petrol engine produced by the Standard Motor Company.Originally developed concurrently for passenger car use and for the Ferguson TE20 tractor, it was widely used for Standard passenger cars of the 1950s, most notably the Vanguard.
It was used to power the first stage of the Vanguard rockets on the Vanguard project. As was common to engines based on the V-2 experience, the turbine was driven by steam generated by catalytic decomposition of H 2 O 2 and the combustion chamber was regeneratively cooled. [3] [4] The engine was gimbaled to supply thrust vectoring.
The Mitsubishi Agreement – The Vanguard line initially consisted of three single-cylinder engines and several V-twin engines. The V-twins, made by DBS, had sold very well but the single-cylinder engine models, originally produced at Briggs & Stratton's Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin plant, didn't fare so well.
This variant was powered by the Standard 1670 cc wet-liner engine, as used with different capacities in the Vanguard cars, and the Ferguson tractor. The same engine was also used in Triumph TR2, TR3 and TR4 sports cars. To use this larger engine, a substantial redesign of the cab interior and forward chassis was necessary.
Like the petrol engines, the diesel was a Standard-built "20C" engine developed for the Ferguson tractor. The diesels fitted to the tractor were restricted to 2200 rpm and developed 25 horsepower (19 kW), but road-going engines in Vanguards had no limiter and so produced 60 horsepower (45 kW) at 3800 rpm.
