The BMW E21 is the first generation of the BMW 3 Series, a range of compact executive cars. The E21 was produced from June 1975 to December 1983 and replaced the BMW 02 Series . The series was exclusively built in a two-door coupé body style (except for convertibles made by Baur).
The engine’s additional weight prompted the fitting of larger brake drums and wheels than on the 326. The 335 sustained BMW’s reputation for innovation, being the first car to offer a four-speed gear box with full synchromesh on all ratios. The car was sold as a four-door sedan and as a two- or (more unusually) four-door cabriolet. [2]

In June 2022, BMW revealed the first BMW M3 Touring, codenamed G81. Based on the seventh generation 3 Series, it marks the first time a BMW M Touring model reached the market. [ 27 ] The touring version of the M3 contains the same engine and interior setup as the M3 sedan, but extends the roof line to become a wagon .

Launched in March 1994, the E36 3 Series Compact (model code E36/5), was BMW's first hatchback since the 2002 Touring model was discontinued in 1974. It reportedly cost BMW $500 million USD to develop the hatchback from the E36 platform. [2] From the front bumper to the A-pillar, the E36/5 is identical to the E36 saloon.
BMW also introduced a separate hatchback model under the 3 Series nameplate called the 3 Series Gran Turismo (F34). The F30 is the first generation of the 3 Series to be powered by a range of turbocharged engines exclusively and electric power steering (replacing the hydraulic power steering systems used previously). In tune with BMW's core values regarding handling dynamics, [33] the E46 was initially available with a rear-wheel drive layout and a 50/50 weight distribution. [ 28 ] [ 34 ] All-wheel drive , which was last available in the 3 Series in 1991, [ 35 ] was reintroduced for the E46 on the 325xi, 330xi and 330xd models.
