The number of passing grades awarded in each scholarship subject is set at approximately 3% of the size of the Level 3 Cohort. The Level 3 Cohort is the number of students who achieve 14+ credits in the NCEA Level 3 equivalent of said subject. There are two types of passing grade, Scholarship (S) and Outstanding (O).
The NCEA system has three levels – one, two, and three – corresponding to their respective levels on the National Qualifications Framework. Some subjects were a mixture of internal and external assessments. Internal assessment increased in later years. Subjects such as art, music and design technology were internally assessed by the school and nationally moderated. Originally internal exams were adjusted and scaled to ensure only 50% of students gained a "C" grade or higher.
