Located where the M62 crosses above the M1 motorway, it is a complex three-level junction with eight bridges including a roundabout supported by four long curved bridges on 12-metre (39 ft) piers above both motorways. The roundabout's north and south bridges have spans of 28 m (92 ft) and the east and west have spans of 21 m (69 ft).
It continues to its next junction, where it has a 1-mile (1.6 km) spur. Although signed as the A627(M), a map exists showing it as the A6138(M). [citation needed] After this junction it gains a third lane, before reaching a roundabout at the M62 junction 20. This junction has been designed to accommodate a future flyover.

The M62 was re-routed to run via the route of the M52 between Worsley and Liverpool. That left a short stump of the original M52 between the M62 and Ordsall, which was initially renumbered M64 and then became the M602.
