Red Mountain is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) that encompasses the local region surrounding Red Mountain in Benton County, Washington.The viticultural area was formally recognized on June 11, 2001 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), Treasury after reviewing the petition submitted by Lorne Jacobson of Hedges Cellars to establish an area known as "Red Mountain."
Red Mountain's vineyards are characterized by good air drainage, light soils and deeply rooted vines. With only 6 to 8 inches (200 mm) of annual rainfall, area growers must irrigate, which allows them to control vine vigor and ease vines into dormancy before winter. Red Mountain's growing season averages 180 days. [5]
Along with Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills and Kiona Vineyard on Red Mountain, Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley (pictured) is home to some of the oldest Lemberger vines in Washington State. The grape has a long history in Washington State, where it known mostly as Lemberger.
The distinguishing features of the Candy Mountain AVA are its soils and topography. Candy Mountain appellation is a segment of a series of four mountains in the area, which includes Red Mountain, Baker Mountain, and Little Badger Mountain, that are collectively referred to as “the rattles” due to their alignment with the larger Rattlesnake Mountain.
The Red Mountain AVA was established in 2001 and is the second smallest wine region in Washington next to Naches Heights. Of the region's 4,040 acres (1,630 ha), nearly 740 acres (300 ha) were planted as of 2008. [ 5 ]
