The society was established in 1933 as the American Military History Foundation, renamed in 1939 to the American Military Institute, and renamed again in 1990 to the Society for Military History. It has over 2,300 members, including many prominent scholars, soldiers, and citizens interested in military history. [ 1 ]
The Conference features scholarly papers by academics and advanced students on a variety of topics, especially in social history and military history, as well as regional topics regarding the Great Plains. The annual meeting includes sessions sponsored by the Society for Military History, as well as sessions oriented to K-12 teachers.

The Journal of Military History is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal covering the military history of all times and places. It is the official journal of the Society for Military History. The journal was established in 1937 and the editor-in-chief is Bruce Vandervort (Virginia Military Institute).
It was formally organized in 1951 as the Company of Military Collectors and Historians and shortened its name in 1962 to its present version. [1] From its inception, the organization has been made up of not only historians, but artists specialing in historical depictions of soldiers, uniforms, battles and similar illustrations. [ 2 ]
Wawro won the Austrian Cultural Institute Prize and the Society for Military History Moncado Prize for Excellence in the Writing of Military History. From 1989 to 1991, he was Fulbright Scholar at University of Vienna, Austria, and from 1991 to 1992, an Andrew W. Mellon Doctoral Fellow at Yale University.
