Piney Woods is an unincorporated community in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. [1] It is the site of the Piney Woods Country Life School, a historically African-American boarding school established in 1909. The community is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The Pine Belt, also known as the Piney Woods, is a region in Southeast Mississippi. The region gets its name from the longleaf pine trees that are abundant in the region. MS 42 begins in Lawrence County at the border with Simpson County along Rockport-New Hebron Road. State maintenance begins here and MS 42 heads southeast as a two-lane highway through a mix of farmland and wooded areas for a couple miles to enter the town of New Hebron, entering town along Jones Street before making a left onto Indiana Avenue (at an intersection with unsigned MS 915).
A extension of MS 492 further west has been proposed in Leake County since the late 1950s. It would begin at MS 487 near Tuscola and travel east through the Tuscolameta Creek valley before ending at MS 35 north of Walnut Grove.
