The marching band began in 1918 as a regimental band performing military drills and assisting with music at Sunday schools. The band evolved from a service band to a part of the school’s Department of Music. In the fall of 1964, the band debuted its new name, The SC State Marching 101 Band. [2]

The Carolina Band, or the Mighty Sound of the Southeast, is the official marching band of the University of South Carolina. With an average membership of 360, it is the largest ensemble associated with the university's School of Music .
The school's marching band was 2009, [7] 2010, [8] and 2011 [9] South Carolina 3A State Marching Band Champions. The band has also won the 2013, 2015-2017, 2019 and 2021 state championships in the 4A category. [10] In the year of 2024, the band won another state championship title in the 5A category.

The marching band has been a Bands of America Regional and Atlanta Super Regional finalist five times and won the Bands of America Regional Class AAA Championship in Johnson City, TN in 1999. [6] The band has won the South Carolina State 5A Marching Band Championship five times.
