The Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of four counties in South Dakota and one county in Minnesota, anchored by the city of Sioux Falls. The metro area is referred to locally as the Sioux Empire.
Sioux Area Metro operated an old-time trolley styled bus in the downtown area. In 2014 operation of the service was assumed by Downtown Sioux Falls Inc, and in 2019 they were joined by a coalition of local businesses to continue funding through 2022. [8] Sioux Area Metro also operated four school "tripper" routes until May 2016.
During the 1930s and 1940s, the responsibilities of the commission continued to expand. By 1940, it had 500 employees. In 1967, the Highway Commission was merged with the Wisconsin Aeronautics Commission, Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Wisconsin State Patrol to form the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The Sioux Falls Bus Station is an intercity bus station on the west side of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The station, opened in the mid-2010s, serves Jefferson Lines buses to destinations across the Upper Midwest. [2] Sioux Falls has seen intercity bus transit since 1921, and the first bus station opened on Phillips Avenue in 1924. [3]
Oshkosh Transit Center as seen from the street. The original transit center was located on the corner of Main and Waugoo where buses would line up along the street. The transit center has aged considerably and lacks crucial amenities. There are no designated public restrooms or fare kiosks. [4]
