The first record played on Radio 2 was the title track to the 1965 film The Sound of Music by Julie Andrews. Radio 2 was allocated the Light Programme's longwave and FM frequencies, while Radio 1 used its mediumwave frequencies. In early years, much programming and music was common to both stations, particularly on the shared FM frequency.
