The southern part of the road between Marble Arch and Maida Vale, noted for its distinct Middle Eastern cuisine and many late-night bars and shisha cafes, is known to Londoners by nicknames such as Little Cairo, [1] [2] Little Beirut [3] and, especially near Camden, Little Cyprus. [4] [5]
It was originally proposed to name the station Elgin Avenue, but Maida Vale was ultimately chosen to reflect the wider area. [4] The artist Edward Ardizzone lived in the street from 1920 to 1972 and is now commemorated with a blue plaque. [5] Artist and political activist Peter Kennard was born on Elgin Avenue in Maida Vale. [6]
Maida Vale is an electoral ward of the City of Westminster. The population at the 2011 Census was 10,210. [ 1 ] The ward covers the area south of Kilburn , north of Little Venice and west of St John's Wood , bordered by Maida Vale (A5) , Shirland Road, Sutherland Avenue and Kilburn Park Road.
