Abstract art uses visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. [1] Abstract art, non-figurative art, non-objective art, and non-representational art are all closely related terms. They have similar, but perhaps not identical, meanings.
Hurtubise was born on February 28, 1939, in Montreal, and studied painting at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal. Already by 1960, at age 21, he had his first major show at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. [2] [3] He spent much of the 1960s living in New York City and becoming part of the abstract expressionist scene there. [1]
Robert Motherwell was born in Aberdeen, Washington on January 24, 1915, the first child of Robert Burns Motherwell II and Margaret Hogan Motherwell. The family later moved to San Francisco, where Motherwell's father served as president of Wells Fargo Bank, but returned to Cohasset Beach, Washington, every summer during his youth.
In the early 1970s Allen was involved with Bridget Riley and Peter Sedgley's artist cooperative at the Match Shed in London. In 1970 his large two colour stripe acrylic Op art paintings on canvas were installed at the Match Shed in London (Images from Richard Allen's website) and he had a one-man show at Angela Flowers in 1971.
He recalled them later in the 'Railway Ovals', one of his most successful series of pictures. [5] In 1983, Snee left teaching and returned to full-time painting. Over the next twenty years, he produced his most accomplished work, a substantial body of abstract paintings, mostly in acrylic, that explores his experience of seeing.
