From 1793 to 1812 the Hamilton–Oneida Academy, forerunner of Hamilton College (1812), operated in what would later become Clinton. Its three-story building, torn down in 1830 [ 30 ] : 81 or 1832, [ 31 ] became the original building of the college.

The conservative Federal style of the chapel is characteristic of Hooker's work. The distinctive three story main body and interior design are credited to John H. Lothrop, a Hamilton College trustee. The design includes three bays on the eastern façade and eight bays of double hung windows along the north and south faces of the building.
The building allowed Hamilton to both practice and play on a consistent ice surface years before most other teams had access to similar facilities. This helped the Continentals flourish throughout the 20's and 30's. In the decades since its completion, Hamilton continued to use Sage Rink as its home and the arena was renovated in 1993.
