Arya asks Gendry, who is forging dragonglass into weapons, to make her a special dragonglass staff. When Gendry gives it to Arya, he tells her he is the bastard son of Robert Baratheon. They soon encounter the Brotherhood without Banners, who later sell Gendry to Lady Melisandre, separating him from Arya.

Gendry was born in King's Landing after Robert's Rebellion ended, and is one of sixteen (twenty in the television series) bastard children of King Robert Baratheon.
