The town was originally named by Bohemian colonist Augustine Herman [3] the Village of Bohemia — or Bohemia Manor — but the name was changed in 1839 after the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (C&D Canal) was built in 1829.

Maryland Route 342 (MD 342) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as St. Augustine Road, the highway runs 2.82 miles (4.54 km) from MD 310 at St. Augustine north to unsigned MD 537 in Chesapeake City in southern Cecil County. MD 342 was constructed in its entirety by 1915.
The route runs from the Maryland border, where the road becomes Maryland Route 286 (MD 286), east to DE 15. The route passes through rural areas with some homes. DE 286, along with MD 286 and DE 15, forms a link between Chesapeake City, Maryland, and Summit Bridge, Delaware. The road was paved in the 1930s and became DE 286 in the 1990s.
