The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) is a breed registry for the American Paint Horse. It is currently headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas . [ 1 ] It was founded in 1965 with the merging of two different color breed registries that had been formed to register pinto -colored horses of Quarter Horse bloodlines.
The Azteca Horse Registry of America was formed in 1989 for registering the US portion of the breed, followed by the Azteca Horse Owners Association in 1996 as an owners association. [11] This registry has slightly different registration and breeding rules, and is not approved by the Mexican government to register Azteca horses. [ 4 ]
Although horses were brought from Mexico to Texas as early as 1542, a stable population did not exist until 1686, when Alonso de León's expedition arrived with 700 horses. From there, later groups brought up thousands more, deliberately leaving some horses and cattle to fend for themselves at various locations, while others strayed. [ 53 ]
