Prior to his appointment as privacy commissioner, Therrien held various positions within the Canadian federal government. His last position before his appointment was as assistant deputy attorney general for the public safety, defence and immigration portfolio. He held that position from 2005 until his appointment in 2014. [2]
The commissioner's work is supported by the Office of the Information Commissioner, which was established in 1983 under the Access to Information Act (ATIA) – Canada's freedom of information legislation. [1] The office assists individuals and organizations who believe that federal institutions have not respected their rights under the ATIA.
Some salient provisions of the legislation are as follows: A government institution may not collect personal information unless it relates directly to an operating program or activity of the institution (section 4).
