The first generation of the Chevrolet Silverado is a series of trucks manufactured by General Motors from 1998 until 2007 under the Chevrolet brand and also as the GMC Sierra. Built on the new GMT800 platform, the Silverado/Sierra 1500 and 2500 pickup trucks were first released in August 1998 as 1999 models.
The 11.5 AAM 14-bolt rear differential started replacing the 10.5" 14-bolt in Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from the 2001 model year onwards. However, the 10.5" 14-bolt axle remains in production today, specifically utilized in GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express vans.
An aluminum-block 5.3 L version was also used in 2005–2007 1500-series 4WD extended-cab 6.5' box trucks. The GMT800 1500 Chevrolet Silverado was named the MotorTrend Truck of the Year for 1999, the 2500 HD was awarded Truck of the Year for 2001, and the Chevrolet Avalanche was the Truck of the Year for 2002.
