Earth-fill dams, also called earthen dams, rolled-earth dams or earth dams, are constructed as a simple embankment of well-compacted earth. A homogeneous rolled-earth dam is entirely constructed of one type of material but may contain a drain layer to collect seep water.
The Daguangba Dam consists of a concrete gravity section flanked by two homogeneous earth-fill embankment dam sections. The gravity dam lies over the river and is 57 m (187 ft) high with a length of 719 m (2,359 ft). The embankments have a maximum height of 44 m (144 ft) and combined length of 5,123 m (16,808 ft).
The dam is a 107 m (351 ft) tall and 1,615 m (5,299 ft) long embankment-type with 12,000,000 cu yd (9,174,658 m 3) of homogeneous earth-fill and an impervious core. The crest of the dam is 12 m (39 ft) wide while the widest part of its base is 535 m (1,755 ft).
The dam embankment consists of 200,000 cubic metres (7,100,000 cu ft) of silty-sand originating from the local area. Due to a lack of suitable clay materials in the area, an impermeable central bentonite-cement-soil cut-off membrane was constructed successively with the embankment. [3] The spillway discharges into the Mukurumudzi River. It is ...
The dam is made of earthen construction and measures 49 feet (15 m) high by 2,350 feet (720 m) long. The core is homogeneous earth with a foundation of rock and soil. The dam is separated into two embankment sections, north and south, by a rock knoll, through which the outlet works run, across a section constructed as a low dike. Maximum ...
Syncrude Tailings Dam, Fort McMurray, Alberta. A tailings dam is typically an earth-fill embankment dam used to store byproducts of mining operations after separating the ore from the gangue. Tailings can be liquid, solid, or a slurry of fine particles, and are usually highly toxic and potentially radioactive. Solid tailings are often used as ...
Rydal Dam is a minor ungated homogeneous earthfill embankment dam with a fuse plug uncontrolled open channel spillway across an off stream storage, located near Rydal in the Central Tablelands region of New South Wales, Australia. The dam's purpose is to provide water storage for Delta power stations at Wallerawang and Mount Piper.
