The Amarillo metropolitan statistical area is a metropolitan area in the Texas Panhandle that covers five counties: Armstrong, Carson, Potter, Randall, and Oldham. As of the 2020 census , the MSA had a population of 268,691.
Before the U.S. Route system, this route was a system of interconnected highways from New Mexico to Oklahoma, considered a part of the Texas highway system from New Mexico to Amarillo and a portion of the Ozark Trails. In Amarillo, the Ozark route split off to a more southerly route, while general low-grade roads continued east.
San Jacinto Heights was established in 1909 by the Amarillo Improvement Company. In 1910, a trolley service was established between San Jacinto and downtown, operating until 1926. The neighborhood also had a newspaper, The Booster , established in 1925.
