St. Catherine's traces its origins to the fall of 1864 when the Racine Dominican Sisters [2] established an all-girls' day and boarding academy. In the fall of 1864, the Racine Dominican Sisters opened a day and boarding school for girls on property they purchased at Twelfth Street and Park Avenue.

The current building in which St. Catharines Collegiate stands was completed in 1923, causing the school to celebrate its hundredth anniversary in 2023. [2] A time capsule was opened at the celebration. [3] The school has a co-op program where students can learn culinary skills. As of 2012, these students prepared food sold in the cafeteria. [4]
In 1888, a normal school was added to the Academy to train young women of the community for the teaching profession. In 1924, St. Catherine's High School was built in Racine and the Academy closed, but the normal school continued to operate until 1935 when St. Albertus Junior College replaced it.

It was an 11 to 18 comprehensive school, with a post 16 curriculum delivered jointly with its neighbouring secondary school, Holy Trinity Church of England Senior School (now Trinity Academy, Halifax).
