The University of Chicago (UChicago, Chicago, U of C, or UChi) [12] is a private research university in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Its main campus is in the Hyde Park neighborhood on Chicago's South Side , near the shore of Lake Michigan about 7 miles (11 km) from the Loop .
The dorm is on the northwest corner of the University's main quadrangles at the corner of 57th St. and Ellis Avenue. It is connected via emergency exits to Searle Chemistry Laboratory. Built in 1892 (Snell) and 1901 (Hitchcock), they are the oldest residence halls still in use as such on the university's campus.
Burton–Judson Courts, often known as "BJ", is located at 1005 E. 60th St. and accommodates 320 students. [6] Located south of the Midway Plaisance, Burton-Judson is a castle-like edifice built in a neo-Gothic style similar to that of the university's main quadrangles. [7]
The Ratner Center also serves as the home of the University of Chicago basketball, volleyball, and wrestling teams. Hutchinson Commons (also known as Hutchinson Hall) at the University of Chicago is modeled, nearly identically, on the hall of Christ Church, one of Oxford University's constituent colleges. The great room (or main dining room) measures 115 by 40 feet (35 by 12 m), and was for many years the principal site of convocations of the university. [ 2 ]
In 1965, the Joseph Regenstein Foundation gave $10 million to the University for construction of the library. In 1968, the university broke ground, and in 1970 the library opened at the final cost of $20,750,000. The building was designed by the Chicago firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, led by senior architect Walter Netsch.
