Tehachapi (/ t ə ˈ h æ tʃ ə p i / ⓘ; Kawaiisu: Tihachipia, meaning "hard climb") [7] [8] is a city in Kern County, California, United States, in the Tehachapi Mountains, at an elevation of 3,970 feet (1,210 m), [4] between the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert.

[ 8 ] [ 9 ] The institution was "run for many years independently from the correctional system for men" but beginning in 1944 was gradually brought under the control of the California Department of Corrections . The Errea House was moved to Tehachapi as well around 1900. No buildings from the original settlement survive at the site of Tehichipa, and the Errea House is the only building remaining from the town.
