Every nonzero real number x has exactly one real cube root that is denoted and called the real cube root of x or simply the cube root of x in contexts where complex numbers are not considered. For example, the real cube roots of 8 and −8 are respectively 2 and −2.

The final digit of a triangular number is 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, or 8, and thus such numbers never end in 2, 4, 7, or 9. A final 3 must be preceded by a 0 or 5; a final 8 must be preceded by a 2 or 7.
Technically, it should be called the principal square root of 2, to distinguish it from the negative number with the same property. Geometrically, the square root of 2 is the length of a diagonal across a square with sides of one unit of length; this follows from the Pythagorean theorem.
