The university's first president, Reverend Jonathan Maxcy. The university was founded as South Carolina College on December 19, 1801, by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly initiated by Governor John Drayton in an effort to promote harmony between the Lowcountry and the Backcountry.
The campus is located on 453 acres (183 ha) in the Aiken area, 18 miles (29 km) from Augusta, Georgia, and 60 miles from Columbia, South Carolina. [4]As of 2020 portions of the campus are in the Aiken city limits, though the majority is outside of the Aiken city limits in an unincorporated area.

The South Carolina Gamecocks men's golf team represents the University of South Carolina and competes in the Southeastern Conference in Division I of the NCAA.Major team victories include the 1964 ACC Championship, the 1991 Metro Conference Championship, and the 2007 NCAA West Regional Championship.
