All tables below have data-sort-type=isoDate added to the column headers. Remember to leave a space in the wikitext before years that are a negative number. Otherwise, |-will be used as table formatting instead of |. "c." stands for circa (approximately). "c." before the date breaks sorting in the first table.

Adding the mw-collapsible class to a table automatically positions the toggle, and selects which parts to collapse. A common use is to make a collapsible layout table, which always displays an introduction or summary, but hides the rest of the content from immediate view.
Sorting can be done in separate files, such as using a DOS-prompt command: SORT myfile.DAT > myfile2.DAT, or else use a text-editor such as NoteTab, which has a modify-lines-sort option. Edit-tricks are most useful when multiple tables must be changed, then the time needed to develop complex edit-patterns can be applied to each table.
In the options menu decide whether you want the rows or columns totaled. Click OK. The table will convert to the new format with the years as column headers. If a table is created in Visual Editor, the dialog includes a checkbox to "Make table sortable". If you check this box, then a reader can sort the table by any column, by clicking on the header cell for that column. Existing tables, or tables created in wikitext can be made sortable by adding the wikitable sortable class to the top of the table:
