The student completes two or more majors in a total of four years and/or earns an advanced degree along with or in lieu of a bachelor's degree. The School of Public Health (sometimes shortened to Pitt Public Health) is one of 17 schools at the University of Pittsburgh. The school, founded in 1948, was first led by Thomas Parran, surgeon general of the U.S. Public Health Service. [1] It is ranked as the 13th best public health school in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. [2]
Its 550 students have a nearly equal proportion of men and women; one-third are from Texas, one-third are from the United States and one-third are international. The school offers Ph.D. degrees in nine (9) formal programs or a multi-discipline program, as well as two specialized masters programs: Genetic Counseling and Medical physics.
The usual requirement for entry into this program is a master's degree in Public Health (MPH). The DrPH program develops in its candidates all competencies included in MPH programs, with increased emphasis on high-level skills in problem-solving and the application of public health concepts.
UTHealth [2] brings together the School of Public Health, with the Medical School, the School of Nursing, the School of Dentistry, [3] the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Biomedical Informatics, [4] and the UT Harris County Psychiatric Center. [5] The school's main campus is located in Houston's famed Texas Medical Center.
In 1992, UTHealth determined it would focus on graduate education in the health sciences. At that time, the school began to shift from traditional allied health baccalaureate programs toward the development of graduate programs to join the other professional and graduate schools in the university.
