Serving from 2000 till 2024, Naveen Patnaik of the Biju Janata Dal was the longest-serving chief minister in Odisha's history. The tenure of sixteenth Odisha Legislative Assembly was scheduled to end on 24 June 2024. [1] The previous assembly elections were held in April 2019. After the elections, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) formed the state government, with the then incumbent Naveen Patnaik continuing as the Chief Minister.
The government was formed as a result of BJP securing 78 seats of 147 in 2024 Odisha Legislative Assembly election which was held in four phases during May and June in the state. The results were declared on 4 June and this led to formation of 17th Odisha Assembly. [2] This government is also supported by 3 independents.
Voting were held on 20th May 2024 in 5th phase of Indian General Election. Counting of votes was on 4th June 2024. [5] In 2024 election, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Sukanta Kumar Panigrahi defeated Biju Janata Dal candidate Achyutananda Samanta by a margin of 21,371 votes.
