The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute was established in the government of India on 3 February 1947 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and later, in 1967, it joined the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) family and emerged as a leading tropical marine fisheries research institute in the world. [2]
The institute has had its headquarters in Kochi since 1963. The headquarters is in a permanent training complex of 5,730 m 2 (61,700 sq ft) in a site of 4.35 acres (1.76 ha). A marine engineering workshop, repair shop and chart hall are available. The regular courses are residential.
The institute has its headquarters in Matsyapuri, Willingdon Island, Kochi and is a subsidiary of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, under the Ministry of Agriculture, India. The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) was formed in 1954 and started functioning in 1957 from its headquarters in Kochi.
