Hornaday Camp (24GH362) is a historic campsite located 10 miles (16 km) south of Montana Highway 200 near Sand Springs, Montana. William Temple Hornaday used the site during his 1886 expedition for the Smithsonian Institution to preserve the American buffalo .
Sixteen American bison were brought from the National Bison Range in Montana to an enclosed 1,400-acre (5.7 km 2) section of the refuge in March 2007 as part of the USFWS Pilot Bison Project. [11] The number of bison reached 87 in 2013, forcing the USFWS to reduce the herd to just 60 animals as the limited acreage could not support so many animals.
Elk River is a 34.2-mile-long (55.0 km) [2] stream in Routt County, Colorado, United States. It flows from a confluence of the North Fork Elk River and Middle Fork Elk River in Routt National Forest north of Steamboat Springs to a confluence with the Yampa River .

Elkhead Reservoir State Park is managed as a complex out of the Yampa River State Park office, located to the west of the town of Hayden, CO. [2] Elkhead Reservoir was constructed in 1974 and is owned by the City of Craig. The Colorado State Parks system took over management of recreational use and facilities at the reservoir in 1998. [3]
The tribes reported 2,851 enrolled members in 2010. The capital and largest community is Fort Belknap Agency, at the reservation's north end, just south of the city of Harlem, Montana, across the Milk River. In 2013, the tribes received some bison and have reintroduced them to the local range.
