Elmina is home to the Elmina Fishing Harbour, the third largest fish landing site in Ghana, beaten by the Tema and Sekondi harbours. The large quantity of gold dust found in Ghana was what primarily attracted Europe, and many natives of Cape Coast used this to their advantage. Ghana's independence in 1957 did not fundamentally change Elmina's peripheral situation. The population increased, as did that of other Ghanaian cities. In 1960 there were 8534 people living in Elmina, ten years later it increased to 12,000.
