Task Force 72 originated in Australia in 1994, when a number of individuals building radio controlled models came together to form a voluntary association.. The name derives from the military term for a group of warships operating to a common purpose, a task force, and the scale of the ship models being built (1:72).
1:72 scale is a scale used for scale models, most commonly model aircraft, where one inch on the model equals six feet (which is seventy-two inches) in real life. The scale is popular for aircraft because sizes ranging from small fighters to large bombers are all reasonably manageable and displayable.
In Europe 1/400 scale remains popular, while in the United States and Japan the most popular scales are 1/700 (making a World War Two aircraft carrier about a foot long) and 1/350 (twice as long as 1/700). Nevertheless, mainstream plastic kit manufacturers continue to produce kits as small as 1/1200 and as large as 1/72, with a few even larger.
Tamiya produces aircraft scale models in mainly 1/48, but also in 1/72 (Warbird collection) and 1/32 scale. Tamiya made aircraft in the 1/100 scale in the '60s and early '70s but this was abandoned later on.In aircraft models Tamiya offers a few clear skinned kits showing interior parts of aircraft.

Models which are commonly made in scale at 1:150 are commercial airliners - such as the Airbus A320, Boeing 777 all the way to the jumbo jets - the Airbus A380 & Boeing 747. Trumpeter plastic models of ships are produced in 1:200, 1:350, 1:500 and 1:700 scale, although 1:350 and 1:700 are dominating. Trumpeter has a cooperation with Japanese ship model manufacturer Pit-Road for kits in 1:700 scale. These kits are usually available under the Pit-Road label in Japan and under the Trumpeter label in the rest of the world.
