The inshore lizardfish is an ambush predator. Its diet consists of various demersal fish and small invertebrates. [1] They include: shrimp, crabs, and cephalopods. [2] Because the inshore lizardfish reside in environments that have lots of changing conditions, the inshore lizardfish diet also changes with the conditions.
Deepsea lizardfish are one of the world's deepest living apex predators, and will not hesitate to eat anything they meet, including their own kind. They are predominantly piscivores, hunting deep-dwelling demersal and bathypelagic fishes. Occasionally, they also feed on crustaceans and molluscs, as well as on dead fish drifting down from above.
In 2023, several lancetfish have washed up on the coastline of beaches of Oregon. While the fish tend to live in tropical or subtropical water, they often need to travel to Alaska's Bering Sea to find food. Beach-goers that see the fish have been requested to take a photo and tag the NOAA Fisheries West Coast region. [13]
The Synodontidae or lizardfishes [note 1] are benthic (bottom-dwelling) marine and estuarine bony fishes that belong to the aulopiform fish order, a diverse group of marine ray-finned fish consisting of some 15 extant and several prehistoric families. They are found in tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world.

Many varieties of fish, particularly cold-water oily fish like salmon, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, “healthy” fats that support heart, brain and eye health.
The variegated lizardfish is rounded in cross-section with a broad, moderately flattened head and a large, wide mouth. The jaws protrude equally. Both jaws and all the mouth bones are covered with conical, barbed teeth. The strong, thick pelvic fins serve as props when the fish is resting on the bottom waiting for prey.
