FlixBus launched its first three routes in February 2013 in Bavaria, Germany, to take advantage of Germany opening up its bus market to competition. [6] In the following years, it added routes across Europe. [7] In April 2018, FlixBus was the first to use all-electric vehicles on a long-distance bus route, between Paris La Défense and Amiens. [8]
Intercity bus services in Germany virtually did not exist until 2013, when the market was liberalised with the end of Deutsche Bahn's monopoly on long-distance passenger travel. Liberalisation led to the creation of a number of coach companies, including Flixbus (founded in 2011).
FlixTrain GmbH is a German open-access operator of long-distance railway passenger services. It is a subsidiary of the mobility company Flix SE [], which also owns long-distance coach operator FlixBus and is supplementing the bus network with rail connections.
Entering the German market in 2020, BlaBlaBus became the first major competitor of Flixbus since that company had achieved a nigh-monopoly in the German long distance bus market through market consolidation, mergers and acquisition of competitors.
In April 2019, the Eurolines operating businesses in France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic and Spain, and the Isilines brand, all of which were formerly owned by Veolia Transport and later Transdev, were acquired by Flixbus. [6] In July 2020, Eurolines operators in France were placed into compulsory liquidation by a French court. [7]
