Starting in the 1970s, Columbia's first major business park, the Columbia Gateway Business Park, was developed, eventually comprising 630 acres. [2]

The project is managed by the county director of downtown redevelopment, who said the county has suggested relocating its arts council from Ellicott City to the village center.
