Hickey (also known as "The Naked Cult of Hickey") was an American melodic punk band from San Francisco's Mission District, California, United States. [1] The band often recorded, released and distributed their own music.
Hickey has stated that his comedy draws inspiration from numerous sources, including the British version of The Office, J. D. Salinger’s 1951 work The Catcher in the Rye, Claire Keegan's 2021 novel Small Things like These, James Joyce, Kehinde Andrews, Steve Coogan (in particular his Alan Partridge character) and John Pilger.
"Bluebirds over the Mountain" is a song written and recorded in 1958 by Ersel Hickey, later covered by artists such as The Beach Boys, Ritchie Valens and Robert Plant. Hickey's original recording of the song peaked at No. 75 on the Billboard Top 100 Sides on the week ending May 10, 1958, [ 1 ] and No. 39 on the Cash Box chart.
In 1957, Hickey was staying with his aunt in Buffalo, New York when he arranged to have publicity pictures taken at a local photography studio, Gene Laverne's Studio of the Stars. The pose—Hickey with his knees bent and pointing his guitar like a machine gun—was the idea of Laverne, an exotic dancer and female impersonator.
