The district comprised the historic county of East Lothian plus the burgh of Musselburgh and the parish of Inveresk (which included Wallyford and Whitecraig) from the county of Midlothian. When further reforms in 1996 moved Scotland to a system of 32 unitary local authorities, the modern council area of East Lothian was created.
In 2023 East Lothian Council granted retrospective planning permission, despite objections from residents, for the neighbouring estate, Moorfoot Estates Ltd, to charge for parking. The estate claimed that they had to deal with anti-social behaviour from visitors to the reservoir. Permits for parking can be purchased in Gifford.
In 1930, following the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929, Haddington was reclassified as a small burgh, ceding many of its functions to East Lothian County Council, as the town was not considered large enough to run its own services efficiently. The town council of the burgh continued to use the town house as its meeting place. [7]
