Haleakalā National Park is a national park of the United States located on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Named after Haleakalā , a dormant volcano within its boundaries, the park covers an area of 33,265 acres (52.0 sq mi; 134.6 km 2 ), [ 1 ] of which 24,719 acres (38.6 sq mi; 100.0 km 2 ) is a wilderness area . In 1924, the observatory was taken over by the United States Geological Survey and it has been run by the USGS ever since (except for a brief period during the Great Depression, when the observatory was run by the National Park Service).
