Haleakalā National Park is a national park of the United States located on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Named after Haleakalā , a dormant volcano within its boundaries, the park covers an area of 33,265 acres (52.0 sq mi; 134.6 km 2 ), [ 1 ] of which 24,719 acres (38.6 sq mi; 100.0 km 2 ) is a wilderness area . Established in 1973, ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve includes a coastal lava field and surrounding waters on the southwest coast of the island of Maui, Hawaii. It consists of 1,238 acres (501 ha) on land and 807 acres (327 ha) of ocean along 3 miles (4.8 km) of Maui's southwestern coastline.
Public transportation does not go through the park, but there are four vehicle based tour companies (Polynesian Adventure Tours, Skyline Eco Adventures, Haleakalā EcoTours, and Valley Isle Excursions) that operate tours of the park and trips to the summit. [26] There are three Sunset and Stargazing tours permitted within Haleakalā National Park.

On December 29, 1962, the site was made a National Historic Landmark, and on October 15, 1966, listed in the National Register of Historic Places as site 66000105. [1] In 2000 the name was changed by the Hawaiian National Park Language Correction Act of 2000 observing the Hawaiian spelling.
The reserve is accessed from the Saddle Road (Hawaii Route 200), about 24 miles (39 km) northwest of Hilo. At 19°41′21″N 155°27′59″W / 19.68917°N 155.46639°W / 19.68917; -155.46639 ( Mauna Kea access road ) , the Mauna Kea access road leads to the north at about 6,600 feet (2,000 m) elevation
