On December 3, 1812, the governor commissioned Harris Brigadier general of the 1st Brigade of the 4th Division of the Georgia Militia, replacing Allen Daniel. [5] [6] After the war, Harris represented Elbert County in the Georgia Senate, 1825. He was promoted to Major general of the 4th Division on 9 November 1829, resigning his commission in 1845.
