The saros (/ ˈ s ɛər ɒ s / ⓘ) is a period of exactly 223 synodic months, approximately 6585.321 days (18.04 years), or 18 years plus 10, 11, or 12 days (depending on the number of leap years), and 8 hours, that can be used to predict eclipses of the Sun and Moon.
In effect, this means that the "tropical year" on the Moon is only 347 days long. This is called the draconic year (or eclipse year). The "seasons" on the Moon fit into this period. For about half of this draconic year, the Sun is north of the lunar equator (but at most 1.543°), and for the other half, it is south of the lunar equator.
Each series contains four or five eclipses, and 46 or 65 or 84 years after the first one another series starts about a day and a half later in the (Julian) year. This means that the clusters slowly move forward to later dates. In a saros series, every 18 years the eclipse moves to the next later cluster.
The traditional lunar year of 12 synodic months is about 354 days, approximately eleven days short of the solar year. Thus, every 2 to 3 years there is a discrepancy of 22 to 33 days, or a full synodic month. For example, if the winter solstice and the new moon coincide, it takes 19 tropical years for the coincidence to recur.
Lunar calendar year 2025. A lunar calendar is a calendar based on the monthly cycles of the Moon's phases (synodic months, lunations), in contrast to solar calendars, whose annual cycles are based on the solar year. The most widely observed purely lunar calendar is the Islamic calendar.

The Moon then wanes as it passes through the gibbous moon, third-quarter moon, and crescent moon phases, before returning back to new moon. The terms old moon and new moon are not interchangeable.
