Cladistic representation of the Mayan linguistic family, going back 4000 years.(The numbers represent proposed historical dates in the Common Era).. In historical linguistics, the tree model (also Stammbaum, genetic, or cladistic model) is a model of the evolution of languages analogous to the concept of a family tree, particularly a phylogenetic tree in the biological evolution of species.
Tree topology, a topology based on a hierarchy of nodes in a computer network; Tree diagram (physics), an acyclic Feynman diagram, pictorial representations of the mathematical expressions governing the behavior of subatomic particles; Outliners, a common software application that is used to generate tree diagrams; Network diagram; Tree ...
A tree structure, tree diagram, or tree model is a way of representing the hierarchical nature of a structure in a graphical form. It is named a "tree structure" because the classic representation resembles a tree , although the chart is generally upside down compared to a biological tree, with the "stem" at the top and the "leaves" at the bottom.
Schematic illustration of a combinatorial species structure on five elements by using a Labelle diagram. Any species consists of individual combinatorial structures built on the elements of some finite set: for example, a combinatorial graph is a structure of edges among a given set of vertices, and the species of graphs includes all graphs on all finite sets.
The man studies linguistics enthusiastically. This sentence involves the following five PSRs: S → NP VP; NP → Det N (the man) NP → N (linguistics) AdvP → Adv (enthusiastically) VP → V NP AdvP (studies linguistics enthusiastically) With a tree diagram, the sentence's structure can be depicted as in Figure 1. Figure 1
In some variants of the Minimalist Program Merge is triggered by feature checking, e.g. the verb eat selects the noun cheesecake because the verb has an uninterpretable N-feature [uN] ("u" stands for "uninterpretable"), which must be checked (or deleted) due to full interpretation. [6]
Although this tree structure is commonly used in computational linguistics, the model on which this tree is based has been considered outdated in syntax since the development of functional categories, phrasal heads, and X-Bar schema, among others, as fundamental grammar concepts.
A sentence diagram is a pictorial representation of the grammatical structure of a sentence. The term "sentence diagram" is used more when teaching written language, where sentences are diagrammed. The model shows the relations between words and the nature of sentence structure and can be used as a tool to help recognize which potential ...
