The 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized)—nicknamed the "Red Diamond", [1] or the "Red Devils" —was an infantry division of the United States Army that served in World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War, and with NATO and the U.S. Army III Corps. The 5th Regiment established headquarters at Detroit in 1815, and began a 30-year period in which it operated in the Upper Midwest, mostly in an area between the current states of Michigan and Nebraska, building and garrisoning a number of posts, protecting the great wave of settlers from native resistance, and serving as a first line of defense in case of another war with Great Britain.
