Iranian Americans, also known as Persian Americans, are United States citizens or nationals who are of Iranian ancestry, or who hold Iranian citizenship.. Most Iranian Americans arrived in the United States after 1979, as a result of the Iranian Revolution and the fall of the Iranian monarchy, with over 40% settling in California, specifically Los Angeles.
The Iranian diaspora (collectively known as Iranian expats or expatriates) is the global population of Iranian citizens or people of Iranian descent living outside Iran. [ 3 ] In 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran published statistics which showed that 4,037,258 Iranians are living abroad, an increase from previous years.

Because an immigrant is counted in each census during his or her lifetime, the numbers reflect the cumulative population of living non-native residents.

[43] Around a million people legally immigrated to the United States per year in the 1990s, up from 250,000 per year in the 1950s. [44]
Regarding Iranian-Americans of Armenian origin, the 1980 US Census put the number of Armenians living in Los Angeles at 52,400, of which 71.9% were foreign born: 14.7% in Iran, 14.3% in the USSR, 11.5% in Lebanon, 9.7% in Turkey, 11.7% in other Middle Eastern countries (Egypt, Iraq, Israel, etc.), and the rest in other parts of the world.
